SHOP Act Re-Introduced
On May 5, Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL), Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) introduced S. 979, The Small Business Health Options Program Act (SHOP). This is the same legislation as the version in the 110th Congress. Among other things, it provides for allowing small businesses and the self-employed to band together across state lines and spread the risk over a large number of participants in order to obtain lower premiums. A House version of the legislation will be introduced next week (while you all are in town) by Reps. Ron Kind (D-WI) and Jim Gerlach (R-PA).
